Frauke Lisa Seidensticker

My professional background

For 25 years, I built and ran institutions dedicated to human rights protection at the international, European and national level. My priority was the strategic development of these organizations as well as their management. Within Amnesty International, I had the opportunity to cooperate with people all over the planet who worked for human rights and democracy, mostly under far more difficult conditions than ours in Germany and Switzerland. Within the German Institute for Human Rights, we felt our most valuable contribution would be applied research. Moreover, we offered the space for lively discussions which allowed people who, without these conferences, would have hardly ever talked with each other, to exchange views. The Management Board of the EU’s Fundamental Rights Agency, a pool of human rights experts from all EU member states, in cooperation with representatives of the European Commission and the Council of Europe, supported the outstanding work of the Agency.

During all these years, I have come to appreciate concentrated, open conversations with two or more people, as the place for profound insight, as the ground on which innovation and solutions grow. This is why, today, I offer conversation formats to promote this nucleus of democracy and fruitful cooperation.

My professional background

Already while writing my PhD thesis on human rights and gender from a civil society perspective, it became clear to me that I wanted to work on these topics on a practice-oriented level. Ten years ago, a consultancy for an international child rights organization offered the opportunity for a professional start in this sector. Since then, I have supported numerous governmental and non-governmental institutions and organizations in Germany and abroad. This continued in my cooperation with Frauke Seidensticker since 2014. We carry out common projects, discuss each other’s work and learn from each other. Over the years, the evaluation of development projects has grown in relevance for my work and has allowed me to broaden my understanding for the work and challenges of organizations in countries as diverse as Egypt, South Africa, Palestine or Honduras. A professional training as “trainer of trainers” attended in 2014, allowed me to redirect my longstanding experience as academic lecturer in a new context. Since then, I have been focussing on diverse and practice-oriented training formats for the dissemination of topics related to development cooperation. Two professional trainings as mediator in the USA in 2015 and my activity as court mediator have not only stirred my interest for this form of alternative dispute resolution but also strengthened my understanding for the importance of active listening and deep engagement in consulting.

Professional stages

2007-2013 As associate lecturer, I have been teaching courses on topics such as human rights, gender, development cooperation and civil society at Potsdam University and the Free University Berlin on a regular basis.
